Rules for precis writing.

• Read the given passage carefully. Underline or just remember the main ideas or aspects of the passage.

• Read the given questions on the passage carefully. See which parts of the passage provide answer to these questions.

• Then write the answers, in your own words, but as far as It is possible to do so. Please see that  your answers are to the point (that Is just according to the questions).

• If you are asked to write the title of the passage, suggest it. The title should cover the main aspects ideas of the passage. Your title may consist of (made up of) some meaningful words from the passage.

While attempting questions on comprehension or writing a précis:

• You may not be able to use words of your own in your answer for some special words, names, terms (words with special meanings), etc., used in the given passage. .But the words whose substitute cannot be found, for example , elements, energy, Asia etc. can be used

• You may not include examples or long explanations of certain points in your summary or even in your answers to the questions, if your answers remain complete by not including them.

• Try to write your answers or summary in the third person or in the indirect speech and in your own words as far as possible.

• Do not include or add anything of your own in your summary. In answers to the questions too. do not add anything of your own unless, of course, you are required to do so.

• When a passage has two or more paragraphs, the summary or précis can be of one paragraph. But when the paragraphs are a little longer or contain different themes, the summary can be of each paragraph separately.
